The mind of the DM is his/her own and can help a campaign along the story arc if he/she addresses the players up front and says what is or isn't allowed. At times, character creation gets bogged down by players who, after making dice rolls for starting cash often can't decide what they need and rush to buy expensive weapons and armor thinking only of "hack and slash" their way to experience points instead of survival of the adventure.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7445677764566060773.post-61323834528004454212022-11-30T14:16:28.025-07:002022-11-30T14:16:28.025-07:00Take a look at Matt Colville's recent video, w...Take a look at Matt Colville's recent video, which talks about the equipment list: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQpnjYS6mnk&t=1554sCaptain Nolanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12258683012806342747noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7445677764566060773.post-31852751874210110192022-05-22T01:53:50.500-06:002022-05-22T01:53:50.500-06:00I didn't realize you had a full game developed...I didn't realize you had a full game developed. I suspect though that in the OSR there's enough items of contention, as well as general variance in thinking, that no one would be able to agree on a single item. I mean, some people pride themselves on equipment lists with everything down to the brass button priced out. I'm trying to think of even one thing everyone is happy with and coming up short.Keith Hannhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11340239903203020361noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7445677764566060773.post-89376153540040182032022-05-22T01:45:15.115-06:002022-05-22T01:45:15.115-06:00I likely didn't make it clear enough in the po...I likely didn't make it clear enough in the post, but that's exactly what I do (I've made some edits to clarify). I agree completely: I've found it really saves time.

I also use item slots, though I didn't go into that here: that's what the S/M/L notes in the PDF beside each item are referring to (that tells you how many slots an item uses). In play the combination has been working out well, since the "cost" is in precious encumbrance, rather than copper pennies, and so is always relevant.Keith Hannhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11340239903203020361noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7445677764566060773.post-57170051036951371612022-05-21T14:31:51.481-06:002022-05-21T14:31:51.481-06:00I feel someone should write this stuff up you sort...I feel someone should write this stuff up you sort of need but nobody gives a crap about, release it as public domain, and other games should just use it instead of rewriting the same list.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7445677764566060773.post-79018626720148511122022-05-20T14:20:02.605-06:002022-05-20T14:20:02.605-06:00Spot on with the need to simplify equipment lists....Spot on with the need to simplify equipment lists. However, there is one additional change that you can make to make it even simpler. Remove any starting money but make basic equipment free. This reduces more unnecessary computation.
While I haven't tested it, I would combine this with item slots. For example Matt Rundle's Anti-Hammerspace Item Tracker. In the book I would visually show those items with the number of slots it takes.Stevenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10963052714195085383noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7445677764566060773.post-81636080910886519282022-05-20T11:06:53.410-06:002022-05-20T11:06:53.410-06:00I applied the same design principle in Modern Adve...I applied the same design principle in Modern Adventuring & Plunder (https://gruszczy.itch.io/modern-adventuring-plunder). Only stuff useful mechanically in the equipment. If I had a "blanket", having or not having would have to have an effect (e.g. no blanket reduces HP recovery) and it would have to be playtested if the item is actually useful.Filip Gruszczyńskihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11422797638747568555noreply@blogger.com
